Germany has approved a labour migration deal allowing skilled and semi-skilled Kenyan workers into its workforce. This agreement addresses Kenya’s challenge of youth unemployment while filling Germany’s labour shortage, especially in sectors like IT, healthcare, and transportation.
Signed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Kenya’s President William Ruto, the deal simplifies migration for Kenyan professionals, offering long-term work visas, vocational training opportunities, and protection against exploitation. However, concerns over Kenya’s brain drain in essential fields like healthcare remain prominent.
Germany and Kenya also aim to ensure safe and productive migration, with mechanisms in place to prevent labor exploitation and human trafficking. While this opens significant job prospects for Kenyan workers, it raises challenges at home, particularly regarding the loss of skilled professionals in critical sectors such as healthcare.
